Dhangadhi: Statistics detailing the participation of Nepal’s major political parties in central government since the restoration of multi-party democracy on 2046 Falgun 26 through 2082 Falgun 21 have been made public, presenting an overview of 35 years, 11 months and 23 days, or a total of 13,103 days, of political history.

During this period, the Nepali Congress has remained in government for the longest duration. The party has been in power for 9,139 days, equivalent to 25 years, 4 months and 19 days. Over these years, the Congress has led the government 13 times under its own leadership and participated seven times under the leadership of other parties, totaling 20 stints in government.

Similarly, the CPN-UML has been in government for 6,286 days, or 17 years, 5 months and 16 days, within the same timeframe. The UML has led the government seven times and joined governments led by other parties nine times, making a total of 16 participations in power.

The CPN (Maoist Center) first entered government on 2063 Baisakh 12. From that date until 2082 Falgun 11—a span of 7,244 days, or 19 years, 10 months and 9 days—the Maoists have spent 5,385 days in government, equivalent to 14 years, 11 months and 15 days. The party has led the government four times and participated six times under the leadership of other parties, totaling 10 instances in power.

The data outlines the 35-year involvement in government of the Congress and UML, as well as the 19-year political journey of the Maoist Center. The figures are expected to renew debate regarding the role these parties have played in governance, policymaking and political stability during their repeated terms in power.
