Kathmandu: Meta is set to implement a new policy on its social media platform Instagram that prioritizes original content. With this, access to photos and multi-photo posts copied from other sources or with minimal editing will be reduced.

According to the new rule, content from accounts that reshare photos, short videos, or multi-photo posts taken from other users without significant editing may not be recommended to new audiences. The company has stated that the reach of accounts that repeatedly publish content created by others will be gradually limited.

Earlier, in 2024, Instagram began taking action against accounts that repost short videos. However, at that time, such a policy was not applied to photos and multi-photo posts. Meta is now expanding this policy to also control similar types of republished content on its other platform, Facebook.

This change may create challenges for accounts that produce comics, fan pages, and comment-based content, as such accounts often rely on content created by others.

The company encourages users to produce original content, such as adding their own edits, voiceovers, or using imagery. However, simply adding a logo or providing general credit will not be considered original content.

The policy may particularly affect humorous content, such as screenshots taken from X (Twitter) or Tumblr, as identifying the original source of such content can be difficult.

Users can check whether their content has been removed through Instagram’s “Account Status” feature. If they believe there is an error, they can request a review.
