Pig and fish farming become key sources of income for Kanchanpur farmer

Kanchanpur: Tej Bahadur Chaudhary of Shuklaphanta Municipality-8, Beldandi, has made Diuro breed pig farming and fish farming a reliable source of income.

Chaudhary, who works as an accountant at Siddhanath Secondary School, Beldandi, has been earning more than Rs 700,000 annually through commercial animal husbandry and fish farming alongside his job. He began pig farming five years ago with an investment of about Rs 1 million and has sold 60 piglets this year alone. He said he earned around Rs 300,000 from selling them at the rate of Rs 5,000 per piglet.

“We have sold 60 piglets this year,” he said, adding that three mother pigs were also sold for more than Rs 100,000. Currently, there are 15 mother pigs and 19 piglets on his farm. He said that around Rs 200,000 is spent annually on fodder and healthcare for pig farming.

Along with pig farming, Chaudhary has also continued fish farming by constructing a pond on the farm. He said that fish are fed naturally by directing pig waste into the pond. He earns around Rs 200,000 annually from fish farming as well. The fish are sold in the local market, while pigs are sold in various parts of Kailali and Kanchanpur as per demand.

Chaudhary said his wife manages the farm during the day while he is at school, taking care of feeding and other work in the morning and evening. “The salary I get from school alone cannot meet family expenses,” he said. “That is why I started pig and fish farming as an alternative, and it has now become a strong support.”

He added that the income earned from selling pigs helped him build a brick house in his village. He said the earnings from pig and fish farming have supported children’s education, household expenses and emergency needs. His farming practice is becoming an example of how alternative agriculture-based enterprises can provide stable income in rural areas without relying solely on limited salaries.
