Drug control efforts intensify in Kanchanpur as 125 arrested in two and a half months

Kanchanpur: Drug control has become increasingly challenging in Kanchanpur, a district that shares an open border with India.

According to the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, a total of 125 individuals — including three women and 122 men — have been arrested in drug-related cases over the past two and a half months since last Baisakh. Deputy Superintendent of Police Tek Bahadur Rawat, spokesperson for the District Police Office, informed that 67 drug-related cases have been registered during this period.

Police, the Armed Police Force, and the Narcotics Control Bureau have been actively working to bring illegal drug dealers and users under legal action. Authorities have recently observed that organized groups are increasingly involved in importing various types of drugs from India due to the open border.

In recent years, the illegal trade of brown heroin has risen sharply in the district. Police data indicate that more than 35 percent of the prison population is incarcerated in connection with drug-related offenses.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rawat stated that police units across the district have been mobilized to curb drug use. “We are taking action against individuals involved in drug use and conducting awareness programs in different communities,” he said. “Alongside law enforcement and local administration, parents and local municipalities must also take responsibility in controlling the problem.” He emphasized the importance of collective efforts and community-level awareness campaigns down to the ward and neighborhood levels.

He further noted that the number of arrests in drug cases alone has been significant over the past two and a half months. “A total of 215 grams and 621 milligrams of brown heroin have been seized,” he said. “Police have also confiscated other substances, including hashish, tramadol, phenergan, and ampoules.”
