Kanchanpur: With the objective of promoting eco-friendly tourism and supporting income generation for the rural community, a solar energy-operated backup system has been installed at Khayarkandra Community Homestay in Jonapur, Shuklaphanta Municipality-3.

The installation has made it easier to provide uninterrupted services to tourists even during electricity supply disruptions. In partnership with Shuklaphanta Municipality, under the ‘Connect’ project and in coordination with Himalayan Nature, solar backup systems have been installed in eight homestay houses. According to Manoj Prasad Ojha, team leader of the Connect project, a total of Rs. 759,520 has been spent, with each house receiving a system costing Rs. 94,947.

Puran Singh Thagunna, technical supervisor at Himalayan Nature, said that the use of solar energy has significantly contributed to promoting renewable energy, improving livelihoods, and upgrading homestay facilities. He stated that solar energy is an effective means of making rural tourism sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Homestay operator Khushi Ram Chaudhary said that the installation of the solar backup system has eliminated the problem of power outages. He noted that tourists previously faced inconvenience during electricity interruptions, but the homestay can now continuously provide lighting, fans, mobile charging, and other basic services to both domestic and foreign visitors. He added that this has made tourists’ stays more comfortable and attractive.

Local resident Tikuram Dagaura said that the tourism business was previously affected by occasional power supply interruptions in rural areas. With the installation of the solar system, the homestay now has access to an alternative energy source, making service delivery more reliable. Kalpana Pant, Deputy Mayor of Shuklaphanta Municipality, who conducted a monitoring visit, said that the use of solar energy reduces electricity costs, lowers carbon emissions, and contributes to environmental protection.

She expressed confidence that such systems would strengthen the concept of sustainable tourism, particularly in nature- and environment-based homestay and rural tourism sectors. Khayarkandra Community Homestay is recognized as a destination showcasing the culture, traditions, and natural beauty of the area surrounding Shuklaphanta National Park.

With the expansion of solar energy-based infrastructure, tourism services and attractions in the area are expected to be further enhanced. The homestay continues to attract both domestic and international tourists. In addition to accommodation, visitors are offered Tharu cuisine based on their preferences, along with opportunities to experience cultural dance performances.
