226 prisoners remain absconding following Kailali jail escape

Attariya: A total of 226 prisoners who escaped from Kailali Prison during the Genji protest on Bhadra 24 are still absconding.

Prison Chief Chiranjivi Sapkota reported that so far, 438 prisoners, including 40 women and 398 men, have returned to the prison. He added that one prisoner committed suicide while on the run and that 19 of the absconding prisoners are Indian citizens.

At the time of the escape, there were 667 inmates in Kailali Prison, including 58 women. Chief Sapkota stated that 665 prisoners managed to escape during the protest, while one prisoner could not escape due to ongoing medical treatment, and another remained in the prison.

“Most of those who returned came back voluntarily, while some were arrested and handed over by the police,” he said. The prison administration has issued notices urging the absconding prisoners to return, and police continue efforts to apprehend those still at large.
