Opposition disrupts House of Representatives session in Kathmandu
Kathmandu: Opposition parties, including the main opposition, disrupted today’s meeting of the House of Representatives. The regular agenda of the session was to discuss the appropriation bill and related bills. However, as soon as the meeting began, opposition lawmakers stood up and protested.
Following the disruption, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal allocated speaking time to CPN (UML) MP Kshitij Thebe, Nepali Communist Party MP Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Nepali Congress MP Niskal Rai, Rastriya Prajatantra Party MP Khushbu Oli, and Shram Sanskriti Party MP Harkaraj Rai.
During the session, Nepali Congress MP Niskal Rai proposed a five-minute silence in memory of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy and the republic, as well as those killed during the Genji movement.
He stated, “We, the members of the Nepali Congress, will stand here and observe silence for five minutes as a mark of respect to the immortal martyrs, the martyrs of various revolutions and movements for democracy and citizen supremacy, and the martyrs of the Genji Rebellion for good governance and accountability.” Following his appeal, Nepali Congress MPs stood in observance, and soon after, opposition lawmakers also expressed support and observed silence.
However, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal termed the incident an insult to the House. He clarified that proceedings of the House of Representatives are to be conducted under the authority of the Speaker, stating that the practice of members independently setting a time for silence and observing it in the session was inappropriate.
