Rare Gangetic Dolphins spotted in Kailali rivers as water levels rise
Dhangadhi: Gangetic dolphins, a rare and protected species in Nepal, have begun appearing in the rivers of Kailali. With the rise in water levels, the dolphins have arrived in the area, reportedly for breeding purposes. Conservationists note that their arrival has been slightly delayed this year due to the late onset of the monsoon.
According to dolphin conservationist Bhojraj Dhungana, the dolphins were observed from mid-Jeshta last year, but their appearance has occurred later this time. He stated that since last Tuesday, three dolphins, including a calf, have been sighted in the Mohana River and the Patharaiya estuary area along the border of Tikapur Municipality-7 and Bhajani Municipality-8.
In a similar observation, two adult dolphins have been spotted at the confluence of the Patharaiya and Kanda rivers. Although the water level in the Kanda River had significantly decreased until recently, it is now on the rise. Dhungana added that if the water level continues to increase, the number of dolphins in the area is expected to grow gradually.
