Medical Education Commission Begins Site Inspection at Geta Health Sciences University

Dhangadhi: A team from the Medical Education Commission has begun a site inspection at Shaheed Dasharath Chand Health Sciences University in Geta, Kailali, to assess preparations for the commencement of medical education programs.

The inspection is part of the process to grant permission to operate medical education programs and determine student intake capacity. The team will assess the university’s physical infrastructure, human resources, academic facilities, laboratories, and the status of its teaching hospital.

During the inspection, the team will examine the university premises, academic buildings, laboratories, hospital, and infrastructure related to students’ learning and practical training. It will also assess whether the university has arranged the necessary infrastructure and human resources in accordance with the standards set by the Commission.

Under an agreement between the university and the Sudurpaschim Provincial Government, plans are underway to use hospitals under the provincial government for students’ practical and clinical training. Accordingly, the Commission’s team will study the physical condition, available health services, human resources, and training capacity of these hospitals.

To launch medical education at Geta, the university is preparing to run academic programs including MBBS, BSc Nursing, Medical Lab Technology, and Optometry in the first phase. Once these programs become operational, it is expected that the need for students from Sudurpaschim to travel outside the province for medical and health education will be somewhat reduced.

Preparations are also underway to develop the existing hospital at Geta into a teaching hospital to support the MBBS program. The university has stated that, alongside expanding the hospital’s capacity, priority is being given to managing necessary equipment, human resources, and other infrastructure. The university plans to integrate not only its own teaching hospital but also other hospitals in the province into students’ clinical training.

In this regard, the university has already signed agreements with four hospitals in Sudurpaschim Province. Agreements have been concluded to link Seti Provincial Hospital, Mahakali Provincial Hospital, Tikapur Provincial Hospital, and Lamkichuha Hospital with the university’s medical education program.

Under these agreements, preparations are underway to use these hospitals for students’ clinical practice, training, and health-related research. It has been reported that a Commission team will also inspect all four hospitals covered by the agreements.

The Commission’s on-site inspection is considered a crucial step in evaluating whether the necessary standards for operating medical education programs at Geta have been met. Following the inspection, the Commission will grant permission to operate the programs and determine student intake capacity based on the status of infrastructure, human resources, hospital facilities, laboratories, equipment, and the academic environment.

The process has gained momentum with the Commission’s inspection, following a long period of anticipation regarding the operation of the Health Sciences University and the commencement of medical education at Geta. The university has stated that it will further advance preparations to launch the medical education programs by fulfilling the standards set by the Commission and incorporating suggestions received from the inspection.
